Reasons To Learn Web Development (That Don’t Directly Involve Getting Another Job)

Last updated: 1st January 2026

Here are the reasons why I want to learn web development (that don’t directly involve getting another job):

  1. I would like to contribute to Free Open Source projects, even if I’m just improving the UI/UX Design (okay this kinda counts as getting another job (where you don’t get paid for it), but this would be a great way for me to do some volunteering)

  2. I would like to actually be able to create some cool things with code, instead of just curating it here and there

  3. Tech independence is a thing that I want to achieve

  4. With AI basically eating the world and showing no signs of slowing down, being able to understand how things work under the hood will be important

  5. I’m bored of mindlessly consuming content online, even if it looks a lot like working on the curation front

  6. I will be able to expand my technical skills and knowledge

  7. Linux seems very cool (based on my experience of using it) and I would like to learn how to use it well

  8. The idea of creating something from nothing feels very satisfying

  9. I can focus on making things accessible since I realise that I strongly prefer using things that have a minimal UI/UX that gets out of the way and lets me focus on what I actually need to do

  10. Having a decent amount of experience in understanding how the internet works will make it easier for me to see beyond pretty and flashy UIs, so that I can start to actually focus on making things beneath the surface just as good and efficient

Overall, I’d say that learning web development is still an important thing for me (even if I’ve been considering it for a few years and have had a few false starts), because of the endless possibilities that I can do with it.
